Noise pollution - what’s all the racket about?

Date Posted: 08 Mar 2011

These days noise pollution is a subject close to many people’s hearts - and ears - and as leading suppliers of thermal and sound insulation, we at www.insulationinstallerslondon.co.uk are only too aware of the problems that can be caused by unwanted and intrusive noise. But what exactly is noise pollution? And how does it affect people?

Broadly, noise pollution can be defined as being unpleasant, intrusive noise created by people, animals or machines. What’s more, that noise will be loud enough, distracting enough (and infuriating enough) to disrupt normal activity and peaceful living. Human noise pollution is most commonly caused by factors such as rowdy passers-by, people coming out of local pubs at closing time; or, most commonly, noisy neighbours whose arguments, TVs and music can provide a constant source of irritation and anger - especially in badly insulated properties. However, just as common is loud mechanical noise emanating from construction, industry and transport. And wherever you live (unless you happen to be in a particularly remote area), chances are that you’ll commonly be subject to the sound of car alarms, emergency service sirens, mechanical equipment, barking dogs and other undesirable noises.

Prolonged exposure to noise pollution can cause physiological and psychological damage to health, resulting in inevitable annoyance and irritation, plus high stress levels, raised blood pressure, general exhaustion and chronic sleep disturbance. Happily though, there’s plenty that can be done to cut out noise pollution - especially the intrusive kind affecting us at home - and at www.insulationinstallerslondon.co.uk, we have the skills, expertise and capabilities to effectively sound-insulate walls, floors and ceilings. For walls, we use spray foam insulation, which provides excellent soundproofing without increasing wall thickness (plus its insulation properties can be great news for reducing energy bills). To soundproof floors, we can easily install a ‘floating’ floor above the level of the existing floor, filling the intervening space with foam; and for ceilings, we use a liquid foam that expands to no less than 120 times its own volume within seconds, filling air spaces, cracks and other places where unwanted noise can leak through.

So if noise pollution’s bothering you, there’s plenty you can do to address the problem - and with the right insulation from www.insulationinstallerslondon.co.uk, you can restore well deserved peace, quiet and tranquillity to your life!
