Turning up the Heat in Older Homes

Date Posted: 21 Feb 2011

It’s all too easy to assume that the insulation within your loft space area or attic will be sufficient to stop heat loss from the home. However in older properties this may not necessarily be the case. Insulation Installers London’s James Barker suggests that older homes may lack adequate insulation, and if so, you’re burning more fuel or spending more on your heating than you need to.

“If you live in an older property, do bear in mind that the thickness of your thermal installation may not meet today’s standards. New builds feature an insulation depth of 250 mm wadding and in our experience we have found many older properties with just 100 mm.

“Ensuring appropriate thermal insulation can make a big difference,” he continues. “With less heat loss you’ll save on energy required to heat the home, so your fuel bills will be smaller.”

Moreover, it has been suggested that thermal insulation – including cavity wall insulation to The Energy Saving Trust’s recommendation of 270 mm – can also help upgrade your property’s market value too.

“Whether you intend to sell up and move on, attaining the best price possible, or simply enjoy a warmer, more comfortable home, Insulation Installers London can help,” concludes James Barker.
